My name is Victoria Showunmi and I am standing for election as Vice President of the UCU because I care passionately about our union and our members. I am currently acting chair of our Higher Education Committee, and chair of the Black Members standing committee.

I became an academic because I believe that education has the power to transform the lives of our people, and the UK in all its diversity. I believe that a truly open and inclusive educational system can, and should be transformative – changing people, giving them hope, and also providing them with the confidence and tools to create a more democratic and egalitarian society.

Our union is truly in a period of transformation. I am proud to be part of this change. I feel strongly that ordinary members should have more influence over what UCU committees decide in our name and I want to work with you to develop a culture in our union in which everyone feels they have stake and a say in decision making and shaping policy.

Across the sector – from Further Education, Adult and Continuing Education, Prison Education to Higher Education, I want every member of UCU to feel that they matter and that their voices will be heard.

And I want to work with you to build a stronger, more inclusive and diverse union. Nothing would make me prouder than to be elected as your Vice President.
